Belleville Dental Experience

How can Belleville Dental Care help keep my child's teeth healthy?

Healthy dental habits begin in childhood! To help maintain a health smile as your children grow, at home brushing and flossing, in combination with professional cleanings and checkups are crucial. To help prevent the development of childhood cavities, we may recommend fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and specific tips to help maintain their dental hygiene routine.

When should children have their first dental checkup?

Typically, we recommend a children see their dentist for the first time at the age of three or at the sign of their first tooth. Not unlike adults, children should have visit the dentist 2-3 times a year. However, we may recommended more frequent visits should we have any concerns.

How can thumb sucking lead to dental problems for children?

After the eruption of adult teeth in children, thumb sucking can cause the teeth to become improperly aligned or push the teeth outward. Thumb sucking can also lead to malformation in the upper palate (also known as the roof of the mouth).

How can I help my child to stop sucking their thumb?

At Belleville Dental Care, our friendly and caring dental team has worked with children for over 25 years, assisting parents in helping their children to stop sucking their thumbs. We understand how challenging it can be for parents to relieve their children of this habit. One option available to discourage thumb sucking is using a custom made dental appliance, which will be cemented in place behind your child’s front teeth.

The appliance is not uncomfortable for the child, but will help discourage thumb sucking by making it less enjoyable.

How do I know if a thumb sucking appliance right for my child?

If your child continues to suck their thumb after she begins to get their adult teeth, contact our caring team to schedule an appointment to discuss your options to help your child stop sucking their thumb.

What can I expect during their appointment?

During their regular office visit, your dedicated dental hygienist will ‘paint’ the sealant onto the chewing surface of their permanent molars. The sealant is bonded into place to seal any grooves that may cause potential problem areas susceptible to decay.

How long will dental sealants last?

Dental sealants typically remain on their teeth for a number of years following application, if taken care of properly. If the sealant does wear off, it can easily be re-applied.

During their checkup, our team will assess your child’s oral health and advise if their dental sealant should be reapplied to help prevent decay on their permanent molars.

Will my child require a fluoride rinse if they have dental sealants?

Children who have dental sealants on their permanent molars, will still require fluoride. While dental sealants provide excellent protection from cavities for the teeth on which they are placed, their other teeth that are not protected by the sealants require fluoride for optimal protection from cavities.
